The Allen Family: Farmers protecting Geographe Bay

The Allen Family is growing a productive farming enterprise while protecting local waterways.

Brodie and wife Louise, along with Brodie’s parents Geoff and Gillian, run 200 Angus beef breeders on their 150 hectare property in Boallia.

Geoff joined his father on the farm in the 60s when he was 15 and Brodie recently started farming full time.

GeoCatch has been working with the Allens since 2016 to increase production on their farm while reducing impacts to the local environment.

They have done this by reducing their focus on phosphorus fertiliser, becoming more strategic with their fertiliser application and applying more lime to increase their soil pH.

Importantly, they also ensure they are spreading fertiliser accurately to prevent waste by applying it in the right place at the right rate.

Brodie had his spreader tested in 2019 for accuracy and was pleased with the results.

“We can attribute cost savings on our farm from spreading fertiliser more accurately and more evenly,” Brodie Allen.

The Allens have also improved management of waterways on their property.

“We fenced off the creek and planted more trees and found we had a lot less erosion. The trees also provided a windbreak and shelter for calving,” Geoff Allen

Their long term goal is to expand the farm business, increase the pH of their soil, improve pasture composition and increase overall production.
