Cat owners keen for catios

Over 70 local cat owners came along to GeoCatch’s latest DIY Catio Building Workshop, held recently in Dalyellup.

An increasing number of cat owners are opting to keep their cats contained in catios, a fully enclosed outdoor space connected to the home that allows cats to spend time outside while keeping wildlife safe.

“Catios not only keep cats safe at home but allow the wildlife to thrive, especially in Dalyellup with its large areas of bushland in adjoining areas,” said Jeremy O’Neill, Manager Community Development and Safety at the Shire of Capel.

Dr Heather Crawford, a cat behaviouralist from Murdoch University explained the elements of a good catio design that delivers the mental and physical enrichment for a cat to live a long, happy life in a catio environment.

Cat Runs WA showed participants the materials and tools required to build a DIY catio and that it can be a hassle-free process if designed well to suit the space available.

“Everyone benefits from catios,” said GeoCatch Project Officer, Nicole Lincoln. “Catios keep cats and native wildlife safe, reduce vet bills and improve neighbourly relationships.”

“The Shire is extremely happy with the great participation at the event, which demonstrates the interest from the Dalyellup and surrounding communities in being responsible cat owners,” said Jeremy.

GeoCatch, a catchment management group, delivered the workshop in partnership with The Shire of Capel, with funding from the State NRM Program.

Local cat owners thinking of building a DIY catio or engaging a contractor are encouraged to use the $200 catio rebate available in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, City of Busselton, Shire of Capel, and Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup. For further information on registering for the catio rebate visit geocatch.asn.au or call 0491 069 078.
