The Garden Guardians of the Bay have arrived to show the way towards beautiful gardens that help protect Geographe Bay.
Our fun new marketing campaign, which promotes gardening actions to reduce nutrients running off into the Bay, is being launched this week across the Geographe Bay Catchment.
GeoCatch board member, Robin Belford, says that urban gardens have an important role to play.
“The campaign is a call to action for all gardeners to champion the right way to garden,” he said.
“We want all gardeners to become ‘Garden Guardians of the Bay’ by growing native plants, adding clay to sandy soils, applying soil wetter and using mulch.
“In other words: To protect the Bay, garden this way!”
The campaign is a new take on GeoCatch’s long-standing Bay OK program. Local gardeners were enlisted to become the superheroes of the campaign: portraying superhero strength and determination to do good for the Bay. Each portrays a garden action that will have the greatest impact on reducing nutrient runoff into the Bay.
Bay OK Officer, Lisa Massey, will be at Busselton Central and Vasse Coles this week with colourful displays and life size cut-outs of the Garden Guardians.
“There will be competitions to win gardening products, kids colouring-in and Bay OK gardening tips for a beautiful low-nutrient, waterwise garden that supports local biodiversity, while protecting our iconic Geographe Bay,” said Lisa.
“In the new year look out for Garden Guardians of the Bay in local garden centres and community workshops where gardeners can learn about garden actions that will help protect Geographe Bay.”
The Bay OK gardens project is part of Royalties for Region’s Healthy Estuaries WA and Revitalising Geographe Waterways programs. These State Government initiatives aim to support the long-term health of our south-west estuaries. The project is also supported by the South West Catchments Council, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.
