Wetlands were prevalent in the Geographe Catchment prior to artificial drainage in the early 1900’s. However large areas of wetland still exist , the largest being the Vasse Wonnerup system. The wetlands system provide habitat for thousands of waterbirds every year and are included on the list of internationally recognised RAMSAR Convention wetlands.

A large number of wetlands also exist within the urban areas of Busselton and provide recreational areas for residents as well as an important habitat for local wildlife.

GeoCatch aims to assist with the protection of wetlands within the Geographe Catchment through monitoring, rehabilitation works and community awareness raising activities. As a contribution towards implementation of the Water Quality Improvement Plan for the Vasse Wonnerup Wetlands and Geographe Bay (WQIP) GeoCatch also aims to build resilience in wetlands to improve their nutrient stripping capacity.
