Seagrass Monitoring

The Seagrass Monitoring Project aims to gain an understanding for the health of the seagrass meadows of Geographe Bay over time and to further investigate any health issues which may arise.


  • Development of a seagrass monitoring program entitled ‘Keep Watch’ in consultation with community stakeholders.
  • Annual seagrass monitoring at eight sites within Geographe Bay, measuring shoot density and epiphyte (algal) coverage in 2012 and 2013.
  • Fortnightly water quality monitoring at the Busselton Jetty.
  • Light monitoring at the Busselton Jetty.

Funding and Partnerships

The project is funded through a State NRM Program Community Grant and has been developed in partnership with Edith Cowan University.

Project Future

  • Develop interpretive signage for the Busselton Jetty Interpretive Centre
  • Report to the community on the results of the first year of seagrass monitoring
  • Work with the Jetty Centre to develop display materials and web content to promote the monitoring program
  • Continue with the monitoring objectives outlined in the “Keep Watch” program
  • Implement seminars regarding the seagrass meadows of Geographe Bay to help further educate local residents
  • Encourage residents to take volunteer roles in helping monitor the seagrass meadows
  • Seek sponsorship for continuation of the monitoring program into the future
