How resilient is your property should a bushfire arise? With our drying climate and increasing risk of bushfires, fire resilience and adaptation is a key issue, particularly for those living in rural and urban bushland areas.
GeoCatch, in partnership with The Forever Project, have been shortlisted in the City of Busselton’s ‘You Choose’ funding program, to deliver two FireWise garden design workshops, with Chris Ferreira lending his expertise on how to create a more fire-resistant garden, for both urban and small properties.
The FireWise workshops will provide practical, locally relevant information to residents so they can create an effective FireWise garden of their own.
These workshops will build on the FireWise demonstration garden in Dunsborough, created in 2024 by You Choose funding, in partnership with Dunsborough Volunteer Fire & Rescue Station and The Forever Project.
This demonstration garden remained untouched during the Dunsborough fire in February 2025 which moved swiftly and devastated Marri Reserve, highlighting the importance of incorporating FireWise principles into your garden and property designs so you can increase safety and resilience in bushfire-prone areas.
GeoCatch Bay OK Gardens project officer, Lisa Massey, says there are many benefits in investing the time and effort in establishing a garden that can more readily withstand bushfire.
“FireWise gardens include specific plant species that are more resistant to ember attack but are also waterwise and create a beautiful landscape setting around the house,” said Lisa.
GeoCatch is asking readers to help make our community more resilient to bushfires by voting for this project. Even if you are not in a bushfire-prone area, you can help by submitting your preferences online.
Visit https://yoursay.busselton.wa.gov.au/youchoose and make your vote count!
Voting closes 5pm Sunday 15 February 2026.
