Saving possums through soft toy sales

Proceeds from the sale of western ringtail possum soft toys are being used to purchase possum rehabilitation manuals for local vets.

The manuals support vet staff to assess and manage western ringtail possums that come into their care. Busselton Vet Hospital was presented with their copy of the Possum Manual this week, with other local clinics to receive theirs in the coming weeks. GeoCatch Chair, Felicity Bradshaw, saw the need for such a resource during her own experience as a vet.

“This go-to rehabilitation manual is a resource for both nursing and veterinary staff, who are frequently juggling the demands of a busy vet practice with injured wildlife,” said Felicity.

“The manual supports our local vet clinic’s contributions to successful welfare and rehabilitation outcomes for western ringtail possums.”

The toys have proved very popular with the community and sales expected to increase further during December.

“Community members and visitors have purchased 350 possum toys this year, which has raised over $3500 for local conservation efforts,” Felicity said.

“We thank the community for throwing its support behind this initiative.”

The possum softies make a great Christmas gift and are available to purchase from the Busselton and Margaret River Visitor Centres for $25, as part of a regional partnership between the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association, Western Ringtail Action Group (WRAG) and GeoCatch. Ten dollars from sale of each soft toy goes direct to local possum conservation projects.
