Soft touch funding possum conservation

Proceeds from the sale of Western Ringtail Possum soft toys are being used to fund conservation efforts for this critically endangered species.

The regional partnership between the Margaret River Busselton Tourism Association and the Western Ringtail Action Group (WRAG) saw the soft toys available for sale at the Busselton and Margaret River Visitor Centres.

GeoCatch Chair, Felicity Bradshaw, is pleased with how the community has supported the initiative.

“Community members and visitors purchased 107 possum toys from October to December 2020,” she said.

“This support has raised over $1000, which will be invested directly into local conservation efforts.”

Part proceeds will go towards resources for local veterinary clinics to assist educating staff in the assessment and management of Western Ringtail Possums.

“We are looking to provide a ‘go to’ rehabilitation manual, which will act as a resource for both nursing and veterinary staff who are frequently juggling the demands of a busy vet practice with injured wildlife,” said Felicity.

“Our local veterinarians are providing their expertise at no charge and often in their own time outside of normal operating hours.

“This resource will hopefully help vet staff contribute to successful welfare and rehabilitation outcomes for Western Ringtail Possums.”

The soft toys are still available to purchase from the Busselton and Margaret River Visitor Centres for $25, with $10 going to possum conservation projects. Future proceeds will be invested into possum conservation projects, as determined by WRAG.
