Why Some Gardens Thrive — Even After a Long, Hot Summer

Have you noticed that some gardens seem to sail through summer looking green and healthy, while others struggle? After months of heat, hot dry winds and restricted watering, the difference is easy to spot — and it’s not just about the plants.

The real secret is in the soil.

Waterwise gardens are designed from the ground up to make the most of every drop of water. While native plants and shade trees play an important role, it’s what’s happening below the surface that makes all the difference.

Successful waterwise gardens usually include:

  • Deep mulch (up to 15cm): Helps lock in moisture and keep roots cool
  • Compost and organic matter: Feeds soil microbes and improves plant health
  • Improved soil structure: With added clay and a small amount of slow-release fertiliser
  • Soil wetter: Applied regularly during warmer months so water soaks in and reaches plant roots

These simple steps help plants survive tough conditions while using far less water. When you also choose a variety of local native plant species, you’re working with nature — creating a garden suited to our climate and providing vital habitat for local wildlife.

Autumn is the perfect time to start planning your waterwise garden. Whether you’re refreshing an existing space or starting from scratch, our Bay OK gardening tips can help you create a garden that’s resilient, attractive and water-efficient.
